Bangladesh is a developing country and working its best to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal. But the truth is the country is struggling a lot to achieve the goals. The United Nations and its partners in Bangladesh are working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. However the country is struggling to achieve the goals and a number of people in Bangladesh are not aware about the SDGs, especially the young generations. At present Youth are the major strength of Bangladesh and they can play the key role in future to achieve the SDGs. Unfortunately very few universities’ in Bangladesh have programs or centers related to SDGs. For this, Daffodil International University aims to establish a center which will work for sustainability. The Center for Environment and Sustainability is established by Daffodil International University to accelerate their research and contribution to achieve United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and overall sustainability. The center is also working for environmental sustainability, disaster risk reduction, quality education, academic excellence, gender equality, awareness raising in both environmental and social aspects by involving the DIU’s students and faculties.

Vision

To increase and disseminate environmental and social knowledge through research, training, advanced and innovative teaching and learning, consultancy and advocacy, technological advancements and national-international partnerships and outreach towards achieving sustainability.

Mission

The mission of the Center for Environment and Sustainability is to accelerate research on SDGs and implement those research to achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and overall sustainability.

Objectives

The Center is committed to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To conduct research and establish partnerships and collaborations with national and international organizations/institutions working on SDGs.
  2. To identify the SDGs related work in the university and implement them.
  3. To do consultancy and searching funding opportunities related with SDGs.
  4. To organize training on SDGs (especially on climate change, water, education, sustainable city and gender) for young generations.
  5. To initiate programs for social outreach activities by involving youth.
  6. To organize skills development training for weaker sections of the society.
  7. To organize seminars and workshops focusing on SDGs.

Expected Outcomes

  1. Increase Academic excellence.
  2. Create research, consultancy and funding opportunities.
  3. Certification on the basis of training.
  4. Publications in the form of journals and conferences.
  5. Increase University ranking.
  6. Committed to contribute to the initiatives of achieving SDGs targets for Bangladesh.

What outputs will be created and how will these be used?

The center is to accelerate research on SDGs and implement those research to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The center will also help to increase student’s understanding and capability about sustainability in all the sectors of SDGs, which will create social awareness as well as increase job opportunities. The training organized with students will increase the knowledge and awareness and later they will be responsible to disseminate that knowledge among different areas people. The research organized by this center will expect some output which will be further published in journal papers, conferences and daily newspapers. The research outcome will further be implemented for the betterment of the society.

How will the initiative be assessed and success be measured?

Student’s involvement and their social activities, research publications, project implementation, university ranking and contribution to achieve SDGs in Bangladesh.
