Zero Emission Policy

BACKGROUND
According to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The proper integration of policy interventions in all 17 areas of SDGs will lead to take action in one area will affect outcomes in others and eventually development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. As a higher education institute, Daffodil International University (DIU) is committed to formulate policy guidelines in several areas of SDGs and take actions to comply with the United Nation’s endeavor and to support the Government of Bangladesh for achievement of desired outcomes.
At DIU, we focus on social and environmental sustainability in the first instance which is aligned with SDG 11 for implementation. As such, the Zero Emission vehicle Policy with the aim of reducing carbon emission (SDG 13) from all vehicles of DIU has been formulated for execution by the relevant stakeholders.
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of the Zero Emission vehicle Policy of Daffodil International University is to support the environment by reducing the carbon emission and improving the air quality in Dhaka city by adopting Zero Emission Transport (ZET) and to ensure a healthy and sustainable atmosphere for the next generation.
ZERO EMISSION TRANSPORT (ZET):
A zero-emissions Transport (ZET), is a vehicle that emits no exhaust gas from the onboard source of power. The following list of vehicles are considered to be ZETs at DIU:

  • Bicycles
  • Electric bicycles
  • Battery operated (electric) vehicles
  • Vehicles with catalytic converter to reduce carbon emission

POLICY:

  1. This policy on Zero Emission Transports of Daffodil International University will be considered as a guideline to gradually reduce the carbon emissions from DIU transports to support sustainable environment.
  2. Bicycles movement within the campus will be encouraged. There will be bicycles in the specific parking stand in the campus from where students, teachers, administrative employees can use those bicycles free of charge to avoid carbon emissions completely.
  3. The students, teachers and administrative employees of the university will be encouraged to use the pedestrian walkways in the campus. The planning and development department will be responsible for this.
  4. The pedestrian walkways will remain neat and clean so that everyone can move without any hassle. The cleaning section of DIU will oversee this matter.
  5. The private vehicles will be discouraged by the university through providing separate transport facilities for the teachers, students and administrative employees. Transports wing will be responsible for this.
  6. Visitor’s vehicles will not be allowed to enter into the campus area. Safety and Security wing will be responsible for this.
  7. The university administration has taken initiatives to install Catalytic Converter in DIU Transports (Buses) and other light transports (cars & microbuses) to Reduce carbon Emissions. The Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management will oversee this matter and be responsible for this.
  8. The university stakeholders who use personal transports, specially, teachers, students and administrative employees, will be encouraged to catalytic converter to reduce carbon emission.
  9. This policy guidelines will be circulated widely among all stakeholders.
