DIU's involvement in SDG policy development

Collaboration with Democracy International and USAID on Policy Dialogue: Democracy on Campus - Youth Preparations & Expectations

As part of the “Amio Jitte Chai” DIUDC Debate Festival 2024, the DIU Debating Club, supported by Democracy International and USAID, organized a special policy dialogue on Democracy on Campus - Youth Preparations & Expectations. This insightful dialogue was arranged with the presence of esteemed panelists and moderators from the popular local TV channels. Distinguished speakers, including Manzur Al Matin, Roksana Anzuman Nicole, Arif Hossain, and Jannatul Ferdous, contributed to the policy dialogue, moderated by Mahfuzur Rahman Mishu. They discussed the present democratic practices at educational institutions and ways to improve and strengthen it further and the recommendations of the session will be helpful for the Government as policy inputs.

Contribution to National Policy: South Asian Conference on "Unfolding Emerging Issues in the Context  of Changing Climatic Scenarios"

DIU collaborated with NGOs like: Aranyak Foundation, Oxfam in Bangladesh, Global Forum for Sustainable Rural Development (GFRSD), Global Center for Climate Change and Environment, BARCIK, LEDARS to tackle the effects of climate change through proper policy inputs. DIU in association with these NGOs organized the South Asian Conference on "Unfolding Emerging Issues in the Context  of Changing Climatic Scenarios". The event  provided a platform for robust discussions and innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The conference aimed to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange among stakeholders.

The contributions of Daffodil International University have been instrumental in advancing climate resilience and promoting collaborative action to address the complex challenges posed  by climate change in South Asia.

Policy Discussion: “Pre-COP29: Advancing Sustainable Living & Green Economy for Climate Action”

DIU in collaboration with the Global Law Thinkers Society (GLTS), organized the “Pre-COP29 Policy Discussion: Advancing Sustainable Living & Green Economy for Climate Action” at Daffodil Smart City. It brought together academics, representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs), NGOs, government officials, and other stakeholders to discuss Bangladesh’s role and contributions to global climate action in preparation for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), scheduled for November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. DIU’s representatives along with GLTS will attend and deliver a presentation in the COP29 session to address policy issues on climate loss and damage. With nearly 200 countries participating, COP29 serves as a pivotal platform for assessing global progress on climate goals, negotiating commitments, and fostering international cooperation to address climate change.

Landscaping of Existing Legislation, Policies, and Standards on Lead Poisoning in Bangladesh: A Workshop by UNICEF and ESDO

UNICEF and the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) organized the workshop "Landscaping of Existing Legislation, Policies, and Standards on Lead Poisoning in Bangladesh," which focused on evaluating the country's current framework for addressing lead poisoning. Dr. Mahfuza Parveen, Associate Professor of the Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM) at DIU, actively participated in discussions on the status of lead poisoning in Bangladesh, highlighting gaps in the existing legal policies. 

Collaboration with Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI)

DIU has established a significant research partnership with BARI through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration is centered on advancing agricultural research, agro-policy, technology transfer, and fostering innovation in farming practices. The goal of this partnership is to facilitate the development and application of sustainable agricultural technologies. The MoU outlines joint initiatives such as hosting agricultural fairs and seminars and providing agro-policy inputs to the government, where students and faculty can engage with experts from BARI, gaining practical insights into modern farming equipment and methodologies. This collaboration also promotes knowledge exchange and supports research endeavors that contribute to agricultural sustainability and innovation​.

 

Engagement with Police Staff College

DIU is exploring a unique collaboration with the Police Staff College in Bangladesh. This potential partnership involves working with Dr. Mohammad Shahjahan, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police and Director of Research and Publication at the college. The discussions have focused on integrating public health research into law enforcement practices, aiming to develop strategies that benefit both community health and public safety. By merging expertise in public health with the operational insights of law enforcement, this collaboration seeks to address health and safety issues comprehensively, thereby promoting a healthier and safer community environment. 

Partnership for Appropriate Policy inputs for Elderly People

DIU signed an MoU with the Bangladesh Senior Citizen Welfare Society (BSCWS) to focus on social value preservation and improving the welfare of the elderly. This initiative supports the creation of an elderly-friendly society, aligning with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). It emphasizes the university's commitment to social responsibility and collaboration with NGOs to address societal issues​.

Policy Recommendations: Blue Economy Plenary Session

The Faculty of Business & Entrepreneurship at DIU hosted a session on the Blue Economy, featuring speakers from government sectors of Bangladesh and India. The session addressed the opportunities and challenges of marine economic development while ensuring ecosystem protection, aligning with SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). This event underscored the importance of cross-border collaboration and scientific research in sustainable resource management.


Collaboration on Climate Action Policy


DIU, in partnership with the Global Law Thinkers Society (GLTS), organized the “Pre-COP29 Policy Discussion: Advancing Sustainable Living & Green Economy for Climate Action” at Daffodil Smart City. The event gathered academics, NGOs, government officials, and civil society representatives to discuss Bangladesh's role in climate action. This policy discussion aligns with SDG 13 (Climate Action) and prepares DIU representatives to present at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan​.
