Cross-sectoral dialogue about the SDGs

Jointly Organized Cross Sectoral South Asian Conference on "Unfolding Emerging Issues in the Context  of Changing Climatic Scenarios" 

The South Asian Conference on "Unfolding Emerging Issues in the Context  of Changing Climatic Scenarios" was co-organized by prominent entities including the Aranyak Foundation, Oxfam in Bangladesh, Global Forum for Sustainable Rural Development (GFRSD), Global Center for Climate Change and Environment, BARCIK, LEDARS, and Daffodil International University (DIU), the event  provided a platform for robust discussions and innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The conference aimed to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange among stakeholders. 

The contributions of Daffodil International University have been instrumental in advancing climate resilience and promoting collaborative action to address the complex challenges posed  by climate change in South Asia.

DIU Faculty Contributed to PEER Asia Forum Organized by USAID and NASEM in Thailand

Professor Dr. A.B.M. Kamal Pasha, Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM) at DIU, participated in the PEER Asia forum, held in Bangkok, Thailand. The forum was jointly organized by USAID and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The forum provided a platform for Dr. Pasha to present findings from his collaborative project, "Unmanned Aerial Systems-Based Assessment of Tree Cover and Deforestation Dynamics in Bangladesh." His research, conducted under the theme of Environmental Monitoring and Ecosystem Services, utilized UAVs (drones) for cost-effective, high-precision imaging of forest canopies in the Sal and Sundarbans forests. The project’s use of UAVs to generate geo-referenced canopy data exemplifies innovative environmental monitoring practices, aligning with SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Collaborated with Democracy International and USAID for Dialogue on Democracy and Youth Empowerment

During the “Amio Jitte Chai” DIUDC Debate Festival 2024, DIU organized a comprehensive policy dialogue titled "Democracy on Campus – Youth Preparations & Expectations," supported by Democracy International and USAID. The event aimed to empower students and youth leaders to actively participate in democratic processes within educational institutions. Esteemed panelists, including policymakers, educators, and local media personalities, engaged in discussions on how to nurture democratic practices and promote civic engagement among students. This dialogue aligned with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by highlighting the role of young people in promoting transparent and accountable governance and encouraging active civic participation​.

 

Jointly Organized Pre-COP29 Policy Discussion with GLTS

 

In collaboration with the Global Law Thinkers Society (GLTS), DIU hosted a significant policy discussion titled "Advancing Sustainable Living & Green Economy for Climate Action" at the Daffodil Smart City campus. This high-profile event brought together academics, government officials, civil society representatives, and NGO leaders to deliberate on Bangladesh's climate strategies and prepare for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The dialogue focused on formulating actionable policies for sustainable economic growth, climate adaptation, and environmental preservation, supporting SDG 13 (Climate Action). This platform not only provided insights into local climate challenges but also strengthened global partnerships for addressing climate change​​.

Young Negotiator Program on Climate Diplomacy

DIU’s Human Resource Development Institute (HRDI) played a pivotal role in a training program aimed at equipping young leaders with the skills necessary for effective climate diplomacy. This program was organized by the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY): (YOUNGO & UNFCC) as part of pre-COP events, focusing on preparing participants for international climate negotiations. The initiative empowered future climate advocates and emphasized the importance of youth involvement in global climate governance. This training aligned with SDG 13 (Climate Action) by fostering the next generation of climate leaders and facilitating dialogue between youth, academics, and policymakers to drive meaningful environmental change​​.

Stakeholder Workshop on Methane and Waste Management

Dr. Mahfuza Parveen from DIU’s Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management presented at a workshop organized by the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA). The workshop addressed methane emissions from Dhaka’s landfills and discussed policy interventions for effective waste management. Participants included experts from academia, government agencies, civil society organizations, and waste management specialists. The dialogue aimed to identify sustainable solutions for reducing methane emissions and highlighted the critical role of cross-sector collaboration in achieving SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). This initiative emphasized evidence-based policy recommendations and innovative approaches to urban waste management​​.

Engagement with Police Staff College (Government Agency)

DIU is exploring a unique collaboration with the Police Staff College in Bangladesh. This potential partnership involves working with Dr. Mohammad Shahjahan, Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police and Director of Research and Publication at the college. The discussions have focused on integrating public health research into law enforcement practices, aiming to develop strategies that benefit both community health and public safety. By merging expertise in public health with the operational insights of law enforcement, this collaboration seeks to address health and safety issues comprehensively, thereby promoting a healthier and safer community environment.

DIU and HerNet Foundation Support for "Bangladesh Decides The Youth Speaks”

DIU Voluntary Service Club provided voluntary support at the prestigious "Bangladesh Decides The Youth Speaks" event hosted by HerNet Foundation in collaboration with the European Union at Daffodil International University.

DaffodilMUN'23 Conference

DIU hosted the DaffodilMUN'23, which brought together students from 25 universities, schools, and colleges for discussions on diplomacy and international relations. The event focused on fostering a culture of dialogue and understanding among young leaders, contributing to SDG 16 by encouraging peaceful and inclusive societies​. “Daffodil International University Model United Nations Associations (DIUMUNA)” is a non-profit, voluntary youth and student movement. It is dedicated to convey the voice of the young generation regarding current global issues such as SDGs, human rights and development, environment, disarmament (demobilization), social justice etc.
