Availability of Diverse Food Options
Different Food Stall with different food options in Food Court |
DIU ensures the availability of diverse and sustainable food choices for students and staff on campus, including both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. The food stalls and the dedicated restaurant, "Green-Garden," offer meal options that cater to different dietary preferences, ensuring that everyone has access to nutritious and environmentally friendly food. By making vegetarian and vegan choices readily available, DIU supports a more sustainable food system and promotes healthier eating habits among the campus community.
Green-Garden Restaurant
The "Green-Garden" restaurant is a full-fledged dining facility on campus that emphasizes sustainable food practices. It offers a variety of vegetarian dishes, making it easier for students and staff to opt for plant-based meals, which have a lower environmental impact compared to traditional meat-based options. The focus on providing balanced and affordable meals aligns with DIU's commitment to promoting sustainability and reducing the campus's carbon footprint through diet-related interventions.
Food Waste Management
Various Waste Management Initiatives at DIU
Organic waste management system:
DIU has implemented an organic waste management system to minimize food waste on campus. This initiative is crucial for promoting sustainable consumption and reducing the environmental impact of food services. By managing 1.5 metric tons of food waste annually, DIU not only practices responsible waste management but also encourages students to be mindful of their consumption and adopt more sustainable food choices.
Integration of Nutrition Education with Sustainability
DIU promotes awareness of sustainable and healthy eating habits through its Department of Nutrition and Food Engineering (NFE). The department not only focuses on academic education but also organizes initiatives and events to inform the campus community about the benefits of choosing plant-based and environmentally sustainable meals. This educational approach complements the availability of vegetarian and vegan options, ensuring that students and staff are well-informed about the environmental and health benefits of these food choices.

Startup Food Initiative
The "Startup Food" initiative at DIU’s food court provides sustainable food options, utilizing local ingredients where possible to reduce the environmental impact of sourcing food from distant locations. By supporting local food systems and reducing carbon emissions associated with long supply chains, this initiative aligns with DIU’s broader sustainability goals. Furthermore, the availability of locally sourced and plant-based options helps to promote sustainable dietary habits among the university community.
