Training and Knowledge Transfer Initiatives
DIU engages in multiple initiatives aimed at providing local farmers with access to sustainable agricultural knowledge and practices. For instance, the university’s Department of Agricultural Science regularly organizes training programs and workshops that teach farmers efficient farming techniques, such as soil management and crop rotation. These programs are designed to improve the productivity and sustainability of local agricultural practices. The knowledge shared in these sessions equips farmers with the skills needed to enhance food security in their communities.
Seedling Distribution to Support Food Security
One of DIU’s significant interventions is the distribution of rice and vegetable seedlings to flood-affected farmers. This initiative helps local farmers resume agricultural activities after natural disasters, thereby restoring food production and ensuring community food security. The Department of Agricultural Science leads this program, providing farmers with not only physical resources but also guidance on sustainable farming practices to prevent future food insecurity.
Research and Knowledge Dissemination
DIU faculty and researchers conduct studies on topics such as soil salinity mapping, irrigation efficiency, and agricultural sustainability. The findings from these research projects are shared with local farmers through community outreach and engagement activities. By disseminating research insights, DIU empowers farmers with the technological and scientific knowledge needed to optimize their farming practices, reduce environmental impact, and enhance crop yields.

Partnerships for Agricultural Development
DIU collaborates with organizations like the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) to advance agricultural research and innovation. These partnerships facilitate the transfer of technology and knowledge to local farmers, supporting them in adopting modern, sustainable agricultural methods. This collaboration ensures that DIU’s research and educational resources are effectively utilized to benefit local food producers and contribute to sustainable development.
Agricultural Machinery Fair and Seminar
DIU’s Department of Agricultural Science organized an Agricultural Machinery Fair and Seminar in collaboration with the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). This event aimed to educate farmers and students on the latest advancements in agricultural technology. The fair showcased modern machinery and demonstrated their practical applications, giving local farmers hands-on experience and knowledge about how to improve their agricultural efficiency. Over 375 students and numerous local farmers participated, gaining valuable insights into modern farming techniques and innovations.
Workshops on Organic Farming Techniques
DIU regularly hosts workshops that promote organic farming techniques to local farmers. These workshops cover topics such as composting, natural pest control, and crop diversification, helping farmers transition to more sustainable agricultural practices. By providing education and practical demonstrations, DIU empowers farmers to produce healthier food while also protecting the environment. These organic farming workshops contribute to the overall goal of sustainable agriculture and food security in the region.
Tele-nutrition Program for Adolescent Nutrition
DIU's Department of Nutrition and Food Engineering has implemented a tele-nutrition program, led by Dr. Arif Chowdhury Apou and Umme Habiba Tanny. This program focuses on providing adolescents with nutritional guidance and education through virtual platforms. The initiative empowers young individuals by offering personalized dietary advice, helping them make informed food choices. This program not only supports healthier lifestyles but also addresses broader issues related to food security by emphasizing the importance of nutrition education. It aligns with sustainable food practices and highlights the university’s role in promoting nutritional well-being in the community.
